1. OpenAI just announced it plans to introduce ads to its ChatGPT Free and Go accounts.
2. There is no announced launch date for ChatGPT ads in Australia, but industry experts are expecting to see them sometime in 2026.
As of 2026, OpenAI has announced it will soon introduce advertising to its ChatGPT Free and Go users. However, it’s not all what you might be expecting. While not yet live globally, trials are underway in some countries, including the U.S., testing technical and user experience.
OpenAI has been clear about the principles for its advertising from the outset. If you’re preparing your business to leverage this contemporary ad platform, then you’ll find some use in reading their principles below. It’s best to brush up on this stuff early!
But first, let’s take a look at what type of ads we’ll be dealing with here.
What ChatGPT Ads Will Look Like
Stop imagining what you see on Google and Meta display ads. No, ChatGPT ads will be much more contextual, conversational, and non-intrusive. How will they achieve that? Well, it’s yet to be announced in plain terms.
If you haven’t had a browse of the OpenAI announcement, then we’ve saved you a step, and you can look at their prototypes here.
We’re expecting sponsored suggestions that are separated from ChatGPT's main responses, in a list-style layout below or adjacent to the generated reply. Of course, it will be clearly labelled “Sponsored” or something similar.
Just to be clear, these ads won’t be available for display on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts. That doesn’t come as much of a surprise, but ChatGPT Free and Go are taking the big advertising leap (and quite carefully, too!).
These ads aren’t expected to influence the AI-generated answers, because OpenAI has stated that the model’s responses are based solely on relevance and helpfulness to the query, not on advertiser directives.
So good for the user, but how does that help advertisers? We’ll explore that in more detail below!
